Green Milkweed Locust - Nymph (Phymateus leprosus)

They become quite large (body 7cm), body and forewings green, hind wings red and blue. Its a beautiful locust to see in flight. The nymph can be seen in the photo. These species flies strongly at some height in late summer, forming swarms of many thousands and migrating long distances. They love the citrus trees in the Eastern Cape and are considered a pest. They are rare in the Free State where I stay though.

Like most of the members of its family (Pyrgomorphidae or foam grasshoppers) they can be distinguished from others by a combination of bright colors and the ability to produce a defensive foamy secretion. Most of this family feed on herbs and shrubs rarely on grass.

Some of you could remember I did a previous post on a grasshopper here, where I discussed it as a food source.

Do not attempt to eat this one. Human fatalities from ingestion are known.

Although I am not afraid of most critters, this one secretes a lot of poisonous liquid. I have read its enough to wet your whole hand if you handle them and that even after washing your hands thoroughly the bitter after taste can still be tasted when you handle food. This one sits on a sword fern in my sitting room. I guess I will have to use a plastic bag to remove him this afternoon.

I did no saturation adjustments, this is their natural colors.

Gret shot very good details, USM is maybe a wee bit too much.
Great composition
Well done

Gerhardt, this is superb. very nice detail, good notes and great colouration.
Excellent post.

Excellent image, the detail and colour are brilliant. As has been said maybe a touch too much USM as the blacks have a tiny bit of white fringe around them, but I love the clarity of this.

Wow Gerhard, that's one freaky locust! Looks like a plastic toy from a cereal packet.
If the pixels allowed for enlargement I might have beeen tempted to crop it behind the insect so that it is to the left of centre and larger...but that still looks good with the freaky leaves.

Great post Gerhard... I thought to eat for lunch one salad with some of these fried insects, but I will change of menu.
Excellent quality, with great DOF and adapted frame.
The colorful one of this exemplar, remembers the warnings to us that often the nature offers to avoid problems.

Plastic toy from Japan. Nature is simply amazing! Great sharpness and colours. On this BG it looks even better. Very good picture.

Gerhard, I like the artful composition & the strange colors of this locust. The nuetral BG helps to put all the attention on your subject nicely. At 30 seconds it's good for you that this nymph is still & indoors! Well done!

Great picture Gerhard.
Very good colours , composition and very good details.
Just a liiittle to much USM
Very good note.
Excellent work.

Magnificent bright colours. I have never seen one of these before. It stands out lovely on this background.

It's a good job you said don't eat it...I was sooooo tempted! :-0.

Gerhard, I think this is one of your best bug shots. The bright bug against the clean background really sells it. I think cropping some of the left would make it 10 out of 10 rather than 9.5.

Excellent macro shot, Gerhard. Superb colour and detail.

This is beautiful, the composition is fantastic. The BG is very strange, so neutral and unreal that makes the tones of this colourful subject look too saturated. Strange feeling when I look at it.

Gerhard, you live in a beautifull bur dangerous place. Even a little grasshoppers is dangerous.
I am very satisfied to learn the existence of this grasshopper. I am even more satisfied to know than it live in South Africa :-) Take care! Gerhard!
The composition works well. USM is ok for me. I wonder only what forms the uniform background.

it's so unreal! and the gray background improve this thing.

Hi Gerhard

i like the different tones of green and the long compo works well too.

Besides your usual sharpness and clarity, I especially like the composition of this shot.. Very well done

Hoe is die nuwe lens?

Wow this is sharp and crisp. Excellent DOF, great colours and a nicely unobtrusive background. Did he sit this still for 30 seconds ?! ;-))

Excellent sharp image with accompanied gruesome notes. Thanks for the warning!
