Polyommatus icarus

The blue one lives in poor grass countries. There where is a short vegetation and there must be open spots. In this must then some plants occur. It go's me to far to look for the names of those plants.

The blue one can be easily confused with the brown blue one. Of the differences is see in the white edging. At the brown blue one the wing veins run by as a result of which seem the edging crammed. More over the female has icarus no complete file edging dots. On the base being lacking carrot macula of the characteristics brown of blue.

The butterfly can occur in two generations, flying from May to October. The male has two possibilities of demolishing a female: somewhere for a high spot with open wings wait, or go in search. After a short s- flight the pair is looking for a spot to pair in vegetation.

The white eggs are generally turned off on the base of the host plants. At the first stage the caterpillar eat of the fabric of the booklet(are there then eating canals visible), later the caterpillar eat of the complete booklet and sometimes they have a visit by ants. The transformation from caterpillar in till butterfly take place on the ground under the host plant, but the cocoons are sometimes taken by ants. They are unlucky. As soon as the small caterpillar has crawled from the egg, it can start with its most important function start, namely, eat and grow. The length of this increase stage differs by type. The caterpillars of most of the types are herbivores and grow very fast.

Within 2 or 3 weeks they are 20 times so long, and 2000 till 3000 times so heavy as they where before. Even the most elastic skin cannot endure such an enormous increase. The caterpillar peels thus a number of times. The body of the caterpillar exists from 13 segments. To the three first body parts behind the head, sit each time 2 udder legs. With those legs, the caterpillar holds its food fast. More to the back sits 5 couples of course legs. This are exactly small suction cups, with that the caterpillar can hold himself to the plant. The caterpillars of the second generation wintered till they come next spring out of there headstock.

Yes he's coming in. I must say this is more luck then whisdom. Before I had it with a sheep, I took a photo in the countryside of a sheep and at home one the screen I saw that he was missing one leg. I was realy suprised.I hope that you like this one, I left the composition held with only a little cropp. The distanche was abou 12 cm. I hope you like the result too. I do.

A nice one Jaap! Gefeliciteerd! Een mooie informatieve note ook.

It's a cool shot Jaap! Anytime you can capture these things in-flight so well it's a great accomplishment. Well done!!

Jaap, incredible photo to show us an incredible moment. 1/750 worked well here. Colors are great, as well as POV and DOF. Really nice.

Good stuff Jaap, I think you did a great job to capture this blue with a hoverfly in tow. Nice shot.

When I saw this picture I said to myself that the picture has too much details, then I realized that there is another BF in the air, great catch.

Brilliant Jaap. I have shots of these but not as good as this. very well done. I like it.

Weer een zeer mooie Jaap, en zeker met drie elementen, de vlinder als hoofd doel de bloem voor de kleur en als detail de bij die haar landing zal maken, alles prachtig van kleur en goed geplaatst.
Mooi werk Jaap.
Groeten,
John.

Wow, this is superb Jaap! When I saw thumbnail I though - well, butterfly on the flower. But we have got hoverfly on its back and this makes great action shot. Excellent work!

Super nice picture! The color and detail are great. Excellent framing and composition. Good timing on this one. Nice Work!

Very nice Jaap. I see this is also a two for one shot and a hard one to capture. I love these kind of shots that seem to freeze time for a moment. Well done.

Jaap AND Paul in one picture! This is not everyday that you get this lucky, ans you get to post two for the prize of one. Very nice one of these two small flieres, Jaap. I like the whole picture and the impact. Well done.

Very nice flight-in capture Jaap. The dof works good here showing the surroundings which contributes to the picture. Nice colours too.

Taken on the just time right.. well done

regards

Vladimir

Great shot!
It looks like contemporary, "insectly" David and Goliath :-)

Hi Jaap, dis 'n "windgat" pos! This is really a show off post. :) I battle to get one decent shot of a butterfly and you do that and add a flying hoverfly. Great shot Jaap, really. The hoverfly better look out though... he's heading straigt for the buttefly.

Amazing Jaap, what can I say? only that I wish was a shot of mine! I will only go into personal taste, I would crop some of the bottom off, to give some more strenth to the perfect diagonal made by the insects, subjetive stuff. A very funny picture, I like it very much too.
