Hi Trekkers,

Although the species Wolf's Milk (Lycogala epidendrum (L.) Fr.) is not new on the pages of TN at all, in the past few years its taxonomic position drastically changed. Previously slime moulds were considered as a special class of fungi - nowadays they're placed into the kingdom of animals, as myxogastrid amoebas. Even though the species on my image may easily be confused with lycoperdoid fungi (= "puffballs"), you're looking at an animal now... This type of fruitbody of a myxogastrid amoeba is called aethalium (the other two types are sporangium and plasmodiocarp).

L. epidendrum is a common species with worldwide distribution, however, it's new in my gallery.

Photo was taken during my holiday in Hungary, in B羹kk National Park. Manual exposure mode, ISO and white balance. PP: slight level adjustment, selective re-sharpening after re-sizing.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Laszlo
Great post and interesting note.
I wonder how some people love to study and classify these species.
