Ischnura elegans (Mavi Kuyruklu Kızb鐼eği) [Eng. Common Bluetail, Blue-tailed Damselfly]

Today, a love wheel resembling a heart forming by this elegant pair of damselfly which Ive captured it in Manyas Bird Paradise when I visited our friend Fevzi in May, 2010. I also attached another pair in-love from the same location as WS.

TFL and Cheers,

*****************************

I. genei and I. saharensis baş, thoraks ve abdomen kaidesinde nispeten yeşil renklidirler, ancak I. graellsi gibi ele alındıklarında ayrılabilirler.

Erkeğin en arkasındaki alt uzantılarının u蔮arı (stten bakıldığında) birbirlerinden uzaklaşacak şekildedir. 鈤t uzantıların dış kolları (arkadan bakıldığında) nispeten kalın ve uzundur; i kollar ise birbirlerine paraleldir.

Bununla beraber, kuzey ve doğu Avrupadaki nuttrientce olduk蓷 fakir alanlarda yerel ve nadir dağılışlar g飉terir. Akıntılı ve 驆ellikle durgun sularda boldur, tuzluluğa biraz t闤eranslı olmakla beraber Sphagnum i蔒ren bataklıklar gibi asidik habitatlardan kaınır.

*****************************

Damselflies (Order: Odonata, Suborder: Zygoptera) are slender-bodied insects with all wings more or less the same shape and size. Eyes well separated at sides of head, which resembles a tiny hammer head. Generally weak-flying, resting with wings partly open or closed vertically above body.

Blue-tailed Damselfly is one of the most familiar, widespread and abundant odonates in Europe and Western Turkey, well-known from eutrophic (polluted) habitats and garden ponds. Replaced by very similar species in (parts of) the western Mediterranean and Africa. Absent from much of Spain, where replaced by I. graellsi. Total body length is 30-34mm: Abdomen length 22-29mm, Hind wing length 14-21 mm. Males are bronze-black, with head, thorax and abdomen base and tip (8th segment) marked sky-blue at maturity; Pterostigma is bicoloured. I. genei and I. saharensis remain relatively green on the head, thorax and abdomen base, but can be separated only in the hand, as can I. graellsi.

The tips of the male's lower appendages diverge (view from above). The outer branches of the upper appendages (view from behind) are relatively thick and long; the inner branches are parallel to each other. A narrow, upright projection on the hind border of the pronotum separates this species from all others, but is absent in some females and regionally in males (ssp. pontica). Young males are green. Females appear in three colour forms: mature females are very like the male (andromorph), but have a lilac thorax when immature. Some other females (B form) are identical when immature, but become brownish or dull greenish at maturity. Another female (C) form has a pink thorax at first, but become rather like B-females later. Old B- and C-females may become very dark. The taxonomy of this and related species is complex. South-western relatives have been split off as distinct species, but variation towards the southeast is poorly understood, with several subspecies named. Males from southern Italy, Turkey, Crete and Cyprus islands, and the Middle East, with crossed inner branches of the upper appendages, are known as ssp. ebneri The upright projection on the pronotum is absent in ssp. pontica, from the Hungarian Plain and northern Balkans to central Asia.

Blue-tailed Damselfly extends from Ireland to Japan. Common in the region and typically the most abundant odonate at very eutrophic sites, but can be local and scarce in more nutrient-poor areas of northern and eastern Europe. Abundant at running and especially standing waters; tolerant of some salinity but avoids acid habitats such as Sphagnum bogs. It can bee seen between the months April and October, normally with only one generation a year, but rapid development allows it to breed in rice fields in longer flight season with more generations in the south.

A Note On Mating and Breeding Behaviours of D-flies:

In breeding period, the first step is the capture of a female by a male. Males typically grab females by the thorax in flight with their legs, then shift them around so the male's terminal abdominal appendages are holding the female by the head in dragonflies or behind the head (the prothorax) in damselflies. Both insects are facing the same direction, the female behind and below the male. The pair, said to be "in tandem", will continue to fly this way until actual fertilization takes place. Many species will fly to a perch for the next step, and others will continue in flight.

In order to transfer the sperm from the male to the female, whether perched or in flight, the female will curl the tip of her abdomen up to meet the accessory genitalia of the male. The pair is now in wheel position, and females often reach up with their legs to grasp the male's abdomen. In the more flexible damselflies, the wheel position may be likened to the shape of a heart.

After several mating sessions many males bear marks on their abdomen near segment 7, where the females have been holding on. Several important steps are now taken. Using a set of paddle-like structures unique to odonates and some spiders, the male literally "scoops" away sperm left over from previous matings by this female. After that, the male deposits his sperm into the female. This process can take from just a minute or so up to an hour or more in some species. In perched species, observers can see visible pumping as this process is concluded. The female receives enough sperm in anyone mating session to fertilize all her eggs during her adult life, but if she gets captured by another male the whole process will occur again. During both the tandem and wheel positions other males often try to snare the female for their own breeding attempt.

En ilgin torrent şekillerinden biri. Kızb鐼ekleri, b鐼eklerin en g飉terişlilerinden.

Selamlar my dear friend,
A lovely capture of these beautiful common blue tails in mating position. Photographing damselflies mating is almost impossible for me as I have not seen one still now. Good sharp details and a nice composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Vavvv.. muhteşemki ne muhteşem. Şu ana dek g顤dğm en gzel kızb鐼eği karesi. Birinci sınıf kalitede fotoğraf ve birinci sınıf kalitede bilgiler. Pterostigmadaki 蓾ft renklilik de 蔞k bariz g顤lyor. Hala sizden birşeyle ğrenmek 蔞k keyifli.Ellerinize sağlık Bayram Hocam. Saygılar,

Hallo Bayram
Two for the price of one and what a great shot! What's there to say, it's a really excellent capture - I'd be happy with a shot half this good. No comments about the photography itself, it's on the nail as far as I'm concerned, the colours wonderful and the composition tops. And off course the note is very educational. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna

Good day old friend Bayram! I haven't seen a work from you in ages! Especially with your DSLR! Bravo! A magnificent comeback with this impeccable shot! Truly impressive DOF, POV and composition! Deep powerful colors and remarkable composition! One of your best endless LOVE TORRENT'S!

Merhaba Bareatom,
Exceptional presentation of love. :) Everything is on the rightest place on the composition, fantastic sharpness, beautiful colors, great POV. Elegant and aesthetic job - which I congratulate for - even if the signature is pointless by my opinion. But the photography itself (without additional layers) is a real stunner. Tfs.
Have a great night MF, friendly regards, L嫳zl

What an impressive shot of the two Damselflies. Exceptional detail and very attractive natural colors. Excellent DOF and exposure. Great work!!
It may sound silly, but everytime I see a photo of Damselflies mating like this, it reminds me of jet aircraft refueling in mid-flight.
