|A freshwater crab in Wadi Ghuweir|
I saw this single freshwater crab, Potamon potamios (Olivier) in a tiny brook inside the secluded Wadi Ghuweir at Dana Biosphere Reserve in Jordan (see map). From Wikipedia I learned that the species is half- terrestrial, it can make long excursions on arid lands at night. In Europe (Italy, Greece, Malta, the Balkans) we find a related species, P. fluviatile but like P. potamios it suffers from loss of freshwater habitat and has become rare.
There is an interesting adaptation to the unusual environment for freshwater crabs in that the eggs are protected by the female and the larvae continue their development inside the egg until tiny crabs are hatching.
The species might be a "first" on TN. Enjoy!

Beautiful crab! Like pictures tone and colour combination. Good details and colour.
Thanks for sharing,
Regards and have a nice WE,
A nice shot of the freshwater crab. I have attempted capturing fishes skimming the surface of tanks, rivers or in the hatcheries but the pictures have never come off like the crisp shot that you managed.
