"Put Up Your Dukes!"

|We took a kayaking trip into the mangrove swamps in Costa Rica. The mangrove trees had long roots that stood above water. Zillions of little red and blue crabs were scurrying up and down those roots. I tried to take pictures of them, but was unsuccessful as I needed both hands on the oar to keep myself from being impaled by protruding branches. The bobbing of the kayak on the water did not help with the stability factor either. I was very disappointed. On the way back to the hotel room, however, I ran into this little guy climbing up the outside stairs. He must have been very lost, since we were miles and miles away from the mangrove swamps. But that did not keep him from having a feisty attitude. |
The mangrove crab is not aquatic like most crabs, but instead lives most of its life on the water's edge, where it digs deep burrows in river banks. At night it goes foraging through leaf litter.
Gecarcinus quadratus is a species from Costa Rica. Although it is a land-living crab, it must have access to water in order to keep its lungs wet. If they dry out, then the crab will quickly die. Water is also needed for reproduction.
These crabs do not have a large range, but instead they patrol their 'patch' on the river's edge.
These crabs need to create a burrow in which to retreat. They also shed their exoskeleton. They are omnivorous and would normally eat whatever washes up on the shoreline or what they find in leaf litter.
The female releases hundreds of thousands of eggs, which once fertilized, will hatch and become floating plankton for at least a month. The tiny crustaceans then spend months at the water's edge foraging for minute particles of food.
