Aeshna grandis (Linnaeus, 1758)
Brown Hawker Dragonfly.

Adults. Adult body about 687378 mm long. Average wingspan 102 mm; hindwings 4149 mm long.

The eyes dorsally broadly contiguous; brown and green, or brown and blue.

Legs dark brown. Thoracic antehumeral stripes absent. The wings spread more or less horizontally in repose; dissimilar in shape and venation; sessile; colour tinted throughout. The tinting amber. The inner wing venation brown. Discoidal cell divided longitudinally into a conspicuous triangle and supra-triangle. Antenodal veins in the forewings about 1822 (fewer in the hindwings); incorporating two conspicuously stronger primaries, and those in the costal and subcostal spaces unaligned. Pterostigma well over twice but no more than five times as long as wide; reddish brown.

Abdomen linear from a conspicuously swollen base (briefly somewhat constricted behind the swelling in the male); 4954 mm long (female), or 5460 mm long (male); predominantly dark brown; complexly patterned (both sexes with narrow yellow interrupted bands, and blue spots on segments 2 and 3 in the male); without a yellow triangle on segment 2; with mid-dorsal spots (these lateral and whitish in the male), or without mid-dorsal spots (in the female). Abdominal segments 9 and 10 neither colour-banded nor colour-spotted. The male abdomen auriculate on segment 2; with a single inferior anal appendage.

Nymphs. The nymphs stout, the body expanded in the middle; when mature, 4046 mm long.

The eyes large; approaching one another closely at a point on the top of the head; convex dorsally, their posterior margins not aligned. The head in dorsal view not markedly narrowing from immediately behind the eyes. The postocular lobes curving sharply to the back of the head from some distance behind the eyes. The antennae 7 segmented. The mask narrowed gradually to the hinge (its length much less than twice the front width). The prementum relatively short, being much less than twice as long as its front width. The mask with a flat prementum; with a short slit-like median cleft. The prementum bearing 0 major setae. The body of the labial palps bearing 0 major setae. Distal margins of the labial palps entire. Legs shorter than the abdomen; fore- and middle tarsi 3-segmented.

Yes I know not my best composition but it's an hour to made this shot because, this big one is always flying and stays mostley a few cm above the ground.
I hope you like the photo.
regard jaap

Hello Jaap,
A fine specimen of A. grandis caught from a great POV with superb sharpness and DOF that make it well seen against the nettle BG. The lighting, especially on the head, is excellent and the Composition is pleasing.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Groeten,
Ivan

Hi Jaap.
I like unusual and very impressive dark colour palette of the picture an amazing specimen of dragonfly. DOF is great and all insect is reproduced perfectly as well as attractive objects surrounding it. POV is great and square cropping is very suitable for captured subject. Best regards and TFS.

Hi Japp

Another very interesting dragonfly photo here from you!
This is a species that i've never seen before (probably because it's very rare in my country) and i take great pleasure in viewing it here in TN :)
As you said yourself, this isn't really the best composition and the BG is a bit distracting, but to even catch this species resting and get a good photo from such a short distance is a terrific thing indeed.
I like that i can see the markings on its body clearly and that i'm able to read vast interesting info from the note.

Bravo and TFS

Bedankt.

Groeten,
John.

Excellent close-up Jaap, good details and nice sharp focus. It's very interesting that you are using the Tamron 90mm di as I was thinking of purchasing it early next year. How are you finding it? I did consider the Nikon 105 VR until someone told me that the VR was unusable for 1:1 macro work anyway.

Great shot and TFS,

Dean.

hallo jaap,

goede compositie van de Glazenwasser als ik me niet vergis.
Ook het gezichtsveld is wel goed maar de achtergrond vind ik persoonlijk veel te druk.

Gert
