Fungi vulcanos - Calvatia excipuliformis

There are very beautifil pictures of this nice puffball already in TN, you can look at some HERE.

Some time ago I had the idea of showing one in the process of expelling the spores. At last and after some negative experiences I got some good ones, I chose this because is the most massive eruption.

SOME INFO:

Edibility: Edible
Fungus colour: White to cream, Grey to beige
Normal size: 5-15cm
Cap type: Other
Stem type: Lateral, rudimentary or absent
Flesh: Flesh granular or brittle
Spore colour: Light to dark brown
Habitat: Grows on the ground, Found in fields, lawns or on roadsides

Calvatia excipuliformis (Pers.) Perdek. syn. Lycoperdon saccatum Schaeff. ex Fr. syn. C. saccata (Fr.) Morgan syn. L. excipuliformis Schaeff. ex Pers. Beutel-St酳bling Lycoperdon en sac.
Fruit body 820cm high, pestle-shaped, head 312cm across, pale buff at first then brownish, outer surface of small spines or warts which soon disappear exposing the yellowish, papery inner wall of which the upper portion breaks away to expose the spores. Gleba purplish-brown at maturity.
Sterile base of sponge-like texture, brownish and occupying the entire stem.
Spores olive-brown, globose and warted, 3.55.5 in diameter.
Habitat on waste ground, heaths, pastures and woodland.
Season late summer to autumn but the sterile stalk and empty cup-like base of the head may persist for many months.
Common. Edible when young.
Distribution, America and Europe.

Hope you like!

Congratulations! I tried for almost exactly this shot a couple of weeks back, but didn't quite manage to pull it off as well as this - nicely done! Didn't help that the only "ripe" specimens I could find were in a clump, but even so... Focus is on the nail, and sharpness is excellent too - I think a higher shutter speed would make the plumes sharper, but I like the effect you've achieved a lot! There's a slight shadow on the bigger puffball, and I'd love to engineer a shot without the whacking stick - maybe if you used a background image board to whack them with? Anyway, excellent work, a worthy two points :-D

Filipe I would have to agree with Adrian these are spot on and even the stick is not realy a problem, because it's colour matches the rest so well. The use of flash locks the plume of spore well, nice one.

Well done Felipe. It must have taken ages to get the timing right...you can hardly see the movement of the stick behind them. You don't see many shots like this.
You know, you really should be working for National Geographic or something. Your photo quality is simply faultless, plus it has that certain 'extra something' that makes all your pictures seem alive. Brilliant work!

Fantastic shot.

Great shot here that I'm sure did take quite a few tries to get right. I didn't even notice the stick until I read the other notes. The slight, but even angle to the pair gives it a good compositional score too

Congratulations, Felipe. You can really call it an ACTION shot! It's not only perfect on a photographic way, but it speaks much better than any explanation. You've put a movie in the photo and achieved a rare shot. Not only the idea is original, but the realisation is spot on. I take my hat off to you.

Felipe, I don't know how did you do this shot, but for me it is pure mastery! Even without this eruption this is great photo. Warm light, excellent details and sharpness. I'm sorry that I can't give you 100pts for that!

This is what it all boils down to. That one in a million moment. Exceptional action you captured here. Just fantastic to look at this. Felipe you deserve much more that the points you get for this.

How many tries before you got it right? :)

Great Felipe.
This is a great shot, right in time.
Very good sharpness and composition, good colours and note.

Felipe, you're a master. Great action shot. I am still reeling from disbelief at what I am actually seeing. Brilliant job

Points tomorrow

What fun this image is and certainly very educational. How did you do it? Did you use that stick to bump them and create the "puff" of spores? Super detail nd your lighting/flash technique really worked well.

WOW, this is stunning is all that I can say!

Very well done and thanks for posting.

Excellent !

Even though you engineered the shot, it is worth more than two points, just brilliant. I like the blurred eruption, it captures the eruption. Composition and exposure are perfect.

This is a great TN shot; a favourite.

I's teally great shot. but if it is not necessary.. the branch need to be removed.

No uno pero dos erupciones al mismo tiempo. Cual haza鎙, Felipe.
Solamente una, habr燰 sido maravilloso, pero dos, no bastantes palabras. Qu imagen pasmosa!
Un trabajo esmerado: imagen y nota.
Gracias

Absolutely amazing shot, Felipe. I had to read the critiques and your responses to see how you did it. Your persistence and vision have created an exceptional work.

This is a wonderful photo and congratulations on the capture. Are spores from this species dangerous to humans?

Es verdadreamente impresionante como has podido captarlos con sendas explosiones a la vez, tengo entendido que les llaman cuescos de lobo y mira por donde le venia el nombre, todo un documento.
