River bream - Acanthopagrus berda

I am still taking a wee break from my Kruger Park series and once again I delved into my archives to find something you hopefully will enjoy. This photo was taken during a visit to the fabulous uShaka Marine World in Durban, sometime after my knee operation last year and it is the first photo of this species on TrekNature. I was in a wheel chair for the visit and my caring, supportive, and appreciated wife (all 5 feet 2 inches of her) pushed me around all day long. So this photo is dedicated to her, just to say THANK YOU. I can assure you that we had great fun and a number of very interesting and enjoyable moments. The terrain at uShaka is all but flat and it is amazing what speed one can get out of a run-away wheelchair while gunning down a steep decline with unsuspecting visitors and tourists scrambling for safety.

This fish came pretty close to the glass to inspect me and I managed to get this in-your-face close-up to show the amazing luminance in the rainbow of reflective colours on its scales.

If you might be interested you can view some of my other postings from this wonderful facility where I've also included some information on the Aquarium here, here, or here. Or just visit the uShaka web-page.

Other names

Perch, black porgy, picnic bream, or pikey bream.

Description
This deep-bodied fish has a fairly steep head profile and a pointed snout. It is normally silvery-grey with brassy reflections and a white underside. They can reach up to 75cm in length, but is most common at about 55cm. They can live for longer than 13 years. The colour of individual fish can vary depending on habitat, with fish from muddy upper regions of rivers being much darker (almost black or dark olive-brown) than those further down stream. This understandably, often leads to confusion and misidentification. This species can also change colour after being caught. Sexually mature at 3 years (around 49cm).

Exceptionally well-developed spines dominate the dorsal and anal fins. The pectoral and pelvic fins are also well developed and the caudal fin is forked.

Distribution
Indo-West Pacific: South Africa (no records from Mauritius and R徼nion) to India extending to Japan & northern Australia.

Habitat
Mainly marine; commonly found in coastal areas and estuaries or around river mouths, on sand and mud substrata and sometimes close to sandstone reefs at depths of 10-50m.

Diet
Includes small bottom invertebrates (worms, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms).

Post Processing was done with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0.

Stunning closeup of this fishy face, Loot1 Looks like he was speculating as to what you had for lunch though (^_^). Or maybe wondering why you needed wheels when he never does!
Superb composition, fun notes

Hi Loot,
What a great frame filling composition! the thumbnail just pops out at you on the page and makes you open it first. The fill flash light and angle were perfect here to bring out all that amazing color. Excellent detail. That is one cool photo!

Hi Loot,
The composition of the shot and reproduction of all details and features of this fish are really fantastic. Colours and texture reflection are amazing as well as the sharpness. This is not a fish, this is fish-man : )). BRAVO and best wishes.
Alexei.

Doesn't it remind one of the features of some human face, Loot? They say all human faces resemble the faces of some animal or the other.
Great close-up through glass partition, I suppose.
Mrs. Eksteen deserves all the thanks for facilitating this great image for our benefit :-)!
Regards,
Ram

bonjour loot
on a rarement le loisir sur le site de voir des portrait de poisson,j'imagine que cela n'est pas evident surtout avec le flash.
j'aime beaucoup tous ces reflets metalis廥.
bravo et merci;

Hi Loot,
What a wonderful close capture of this beautiful fish. The colors are really amazing. How light can create such beauty just amazes me. Excellent work on the sharpness considering you had to shoot through really thick glass. I just whish fish had eyes with more life in it.

Niek

Cool image Loot,
I think the "Reflective Luminance" and detail/sharpness is excellent. Very well composed close-up and the black BG sets it off perfectly..
Very well done.

I see where you have been! UNDER WATER! But what a find! And what a sad-sock! Colours and detail are glorious though. The empty eyesocket is mindboggling. Tfs, Jay

Dear Loot,
very impressing portrait in strict and monumental presentation.
A perfect illumination shows magnificent mother-of-pearl iridescence in delightful way that is very subtle as well as very powerful.
The rainbow colours on these very detailed and clear structures look very well reported - and just magnificent.
Wonderful dedication to your dear caring wife, too.
My best regards to her as she greatly assisted you to do such inspiring pictures in the difficult time you had in those days.
With thanks, and all the best to you.

Ricardo

Exceptional close up dear Loot with a workshop that allows to observe the fish in their entirety.
I love the point of view captured with great sharpness and focus in spite of glass of the aquarium.
The only problem is the excess of reflections produces by the flash on the flakes and mucous so sensitive to the light.
As lover the fish, thank you.
My best regards... Ricardo

Hello Loot
Mooi bly maar mooi.
It is a wonderful photo of this fish. You really got all the colours to show up beautifully on this shot. The scales and very fine textures on the fish's skin are visible because of the excellent focus. That big black eye is amazing. It seems like this species does the same as the Dorado, by loosing all its colours when you catch it and remove it from the water. Then it becomes totally drab or dull coloured and you cannot believe that it is the same fish that displayed all that wonderful colours before you took it out of the water. Looks like you had a wonderful joy ride for the day. Thumbs up to your wife.
Greetings
AC

Now that's some close up Loot, superb colour, composition, transmitting light and dof for isolation.

That is the most amazing sight, Loot.
What an incredible close-up!
That big big dark, bottomless eye!
You have captured the iridescence perfectly.
How did you do that?
The details are so amazing.
Fantastic work, my friend.
TFS. : )

Loot this is priceless.

A fish literally hanging in the darkness with not a single reflection in the glass, not a hint of movement, and an abundance of detail, iridescent colour...I mean the thing EXUDES light!

Given your situation at the time I think this is a fantastic effort, to be on the ball and able to spot the opportunity is a canny knack only the best have in them. So, I applaud you for your resilience to being immobile and to your wife for her part in all this!

Superb.
Simon

Hi Loot,
Once again you managed composition and cropping to get a portrait full of personality.
Amazing reflection against the black background has an strong visual impact and the the face seems to have a serious and perplexed expresion that combined with your situation you describe in the note, evoke loots of feelings.

Hello Loot,
You've captured the colourful luminance of the scales exceptionally well.
Detail is excellent and it looks great against the dark BG.
You cant tell this was behind glass, its as if your were swimming alongside it!
well done,TFS

Wow Loot!
This is what we can call a close shot, isn't it? I love this brilliance you caught and great details on this beautiful specie. Composition is very good and those colors are stunning. This is a very nice picture and a very nice fish. Well done with excellent exposure and beautiful dark BG. Thanks,

Hi Loot

Another beautiful acquarium shot from you, my friend!
This is really a superb fish and all those reflections from it's scales and head are jujst outstanding!
Very colorfull and sharp, as well.
The side POV is also great and the "in-your-face close-up" (as you called it) works like a charm here.
This is a splendid photo and i'm sure one that your loving wife will appreciate :)

Cheers and TFS
Horia

PS: thanks for both of your critiques...i only read them now after i came back :)

Loot
Surprise once again!
This is indeed a very interesting photo.
If one would place a pearl side by side the colours would compare, and match. Brilliant shades and variation of colours. Excellent photography.
If you look closely at the fishes chin (not sure if it is the right word) it looks like the fish has goosebumps. My dad used to get goosebumps like that when he was cold.
This is a remarkable dedication to your wife. Her effort in helping you to share such a beauty with us is much appreciated. What I gather from your notes, it seems that she stood behind in the line when sizes were dealt out.
Thanks for sharing photo and informative note as usual.

Wow!
The iridescent colours turned out so well here Loot.
The black background really make all the colours stand out. (the colours of you fish match the colours on my Ammonite ) I like the look he is giving you, a nice portrait. Well shown!

Hello dear Loot!
Usually I prefer to pass the pictures taken in the aquariums. You know, it is so difficult to catch them diving! I think that you feel the same comparing your pictures taken in the wild with that ones from the Zoos!
Anyway, I must tell you that this picture is very beautiful and this colours are amazing! You扉e managed your camera very well to take all this beautiful tones.

Hello Loot,
Superb!A photo of most spectacular, I like that extreme approach that full almost everything of the image, but in addition the iridiscentes details of the grudges and those reflections is hallucinating. I believe that it is one of your better photos.

Hallo Loot
This is absolutely stunning. Really a beautiful fish with colours of a pearl. Just like the pearl is a gem and beautiful, so is this dedication to me, which I consider very precious and special. I remember how you were longing to get out and take photos, after being not able to do so after the operation and recovering time at home. The wheelchair and my pushing ability was the answer. So of to Durban we went and enjoyed the day at uShaka. The deep black eye is remarkable and it give the impression as if you are staring right through a tunnel looking at it. This is a great shot with excellent details. It is glittering and shining all over. It was a great delight looking at this one and remembering our time at the aquarium. Thanks for sharing.
Love
Anna
